_IBC 2008

12-16 September, Amsterdam

The DVB booth (1.D81) at IBC 2008 focused on the arrival of DVB-T2, the newly approved second generation digital terrestrial transmission standard. Its approval represented a significant landmark for the industry and there was a lot of interest in the subject in Amsterdam. The DVB booth featured a number of live demonstrations.

DVB-T2 from BBC Research & Innovation and SIDSA
BBC Research & Innovation produced the first DVB-T2 modulator, which has been on air in the UK since June. At IBC, BBC demonstrated its DVB-T2 modulator and receiver. Implementing all the functional blocks of the specification for the first time, DVB-T2 was both transmitted and received on the DVB booth, on Channel 36. A second demodulator came from SIDSA. Coming some 3 months after the publication of the specification, this represented a significant achievement on the road to the scheduled launch of DVB-T2 based HDTV services in the UK at the end of 2009.

DVB-T2 from ENENSYS Technology, NXP Semiconductors, Pace
ENENSYS, NXP Semiconductors and Pace were demonstrating an end-to-end wireless transmission using DVB-T2 technologies. The demonstration showed how the new DVB-T2 techniques make reception possible in environments where DVB-T services at the same bit-rate would fail.

HDTV over DVB-T
In addition to the two DVB-T2 demonstrations, we also transmitted an HDTV service over DVB-T. At a data rate of 24Mbit/s, this represents the state of the art for DVB-T systems, and the model for DVB-T HDTV services in markets such as France.
